April 15th has been declared as World Art Day and is celebrated all over the world! Here at Nothing But The Arts Incorporated, we’d like to wish everyone a very Happy World Art Day!
Recognized by partners of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2019, the International Association of Art (IAA) described World Art Day as an “...international celebration to promote the development, diffusion, and enjoyment of art” (UNESCO, 2021). While World Art Day was recognized in 2019, Indianexpress.com apparently cites that it was first celebrated by 150 artists from countries like France, Sweden, Slovakia, as well as many others, in 2012 (Indian Express, 2021).
The reason why we celebrate it on April 15th is to honor the birthday of the famous painter Leonardo da Vinci and his long-lasting influence on the arts. He inspired countless generations of great artists after his time and shows how art creates an environment for people to explore and express themselves. By naming World Art Day a day of celebration, UNESCO hoped that it would protect and promote artist freedom for all creatives and help nurture them into growing and developing their talents!
But how would one go about celebrating World Art Day? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! While there’s no right or wrong way, here are some suggestions on how to celebrate World Art Day!
Draw a picture: It can be anything you want it to be, and if you can’t draw, take pictures!
Write a song or poem: I know we’re not all genius songwriters but we’ll never know unless we try! When you think about it, songs are just poems without a melody, so if you’re really struggling to write a song, just start off with a few simple lines!
Try something new: If you’re already someone who does art, well, then today is a great day for you to switch up your routine!
Visit a museum: If you’re someone who enjoys being more active, go out and visit an art museum or an art exhibition near you!
Make a video: For those of you who would like to celebrate from the comfort of your home, make a video; whether it stars you in your own homemade skit, or if it’s just a video of you reading aloud something you’ve written, anything goes!
Lastly, and perhaps the best way to celebrate World Art Day, is to celebrate artists themselves! If you’re not sure how to go about doing that, look no further than right here!
Tell others about your favorite artist: This may seem like such an obvious and simple to do, but to an artist, just talking about them can help them gain traction!
Repost their work on your social media: An Instagram story of their work and a shoutout tweet tagging them can really give an artist the exposure they need to get ahead!
Like and comment on their posts: While it may not seem like much liking and commenting on an artist’s posts can uplift them so much and make them feel appreciated. Every bit counts!
Buy from them: If you have the means to do so, consider buying something they created! It’s a fantastic way to support them financially and helps them to keep doing what they’re doing.
We hope that these tips gave you an idea of how to spend a fun and creative World Art Day and we’d like to thank all the artists out there for continuing to create and innovate. You all are the reason why the world is more colorful!
